Currently load balancing uses the Server availability index and thresholds to determine where to direct users opening a mail file or database. So I have the option to load balance (which is fine if the servers are on the same site), or choose a primary server for all users (100% available) and a secondary (0%) available - which is good for WAN clustering where one site is mainly a DR Site.
It would be great if you could set both servers to 100% available and instead tell domino to 'prefer home mail server' when opening a mail file. That way they will primarily work from the server closest to them (the one designated as their home server) but still be able to fail-over to the remote server and will try to switch back when next the mail file is opened.
I'm fairly sure the switch-back is mainly controlled by the server availability index but the above would help where you have a small population working in the DR Site. Currently they would have to access the Prod site via the WAN and they might be better served using the server closest to them.

Well.... the user can sort of set this today.... on the replicator page, right click your mail file and select options. At the bottom of the basics tab, there should be an option for preferred server. Set it to Any available, try (home mail server name) first.

It WOULD REALLY, REALLY, REALLY be nice if there was some way that when a new local replica is created we could set by policy to set this option to set it to Any available, try (Administration server or Home mail server) first....

the current default option which is: try any available, try last successful first, is why people don't fail back to their home server in a cluster when the cluster server comes back on line..... :-(

Sort of. So long as they work from a local replica.
